Nutrient Profile of Dunaliella Salina
A spectrum of nutrients

Dunaliella salina cells are the richest known source of dietary beta-carotene, typically comprising 8 – 10% of its dry weight (and sometimes higher). Dunaliella salina is rich in a spectrum of daily life nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, protein and amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, chlorophyll and other important phytonutrients.

Powerful antioxidant carotenoids

Dunaliella salina contains a mix of natural carotenoids. Some of the major carotenoids include: beta-carotene, alphacarotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. Carotenoids are pigments responsible for the red, orange, yellow and green colours of fruit and vegetables. Research shows that carotenoids have antioxidant, anticarcinogenic and immune enhancing properties. They help to protect against free radical cell damage responsible for premature ageing, cataracts, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases.

Natural dietary beta-carotene

Dunaliella salina is one of nature’s richest sources of natural beta-carotene and contains many of the different carotenoids commonly found in fruit and vegetables.

Whereas, one gram of whole dried Dunaliella salina contains around 10–20mg of beta-carotene, plus other carotenoids and nutrients. Research shows that natural dietary betacarotene is a powerful antioxidant that effectively reduces the risk of many chronic diseases. Beta-carotene is also an important provitamin A nutrient that can be converted to retinol (vitamin A) in the body as required.

Minerals
Whole dried Dunaliella salina is exceptionally rich in nutrient and antioxidant minerals, particularly selenium and magnesium. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that aids in detoxification and immune health. Magnesium is vital for healthy cellular metabolism, energy production and nerve and muscle function.

Vitamins
Dunaliella salina contains a range of nutrients including vitamin E, cobalamin (vitamin B12) and provitamin A. Vitamin A plays an essential role in vision, growth, reproduction and regulation of the immune system. It also helps maintain the health and integrity of the skin and mucous membranes. Cobalamin is necessary for proper energy metabolism, immune function and nerve function.

Chlorophyll
Dunaliella salina is rich in chlorophyll, a powerful cleansing agent that may increase the body’s elimination of harmful toxins.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs)
Dunaliella salina contains EFAs, highly concentrated unsaturated lipids that help reduce cholesterol and fat levels in the blood, prevent heart disease, reduce inflammation in arthritis, improve immunity and brain function, and support normal reproductive and menstrual health. These lipids, including Omega 3, Omega 6, Linoleic Acid and alpha Linoleic Acid are essential for the absorption of carotenoids, vitamin E and other fat-soluble nutrients.

Amino acids
Dunaliella salina has a high content of useable protein (amino acids). Amino acids are the basic building materials of life, required for the synthesis of muscles, skin and connective tissues, hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters

How does Dunaliella salina compare?
A number of algal and nutrient-rich ‘super-foods’ are available, including spirulina, chlorella, kelp, wheat grass and green barley. Carrots are famous for their high beta-carotene and carotenoid levels compared to other fruits and vegetables. When their nutrient content is compared, however, Dunaliella salina has superior overall mineral, carotenoid and phytonutrient levels.
